Looking for a fun way to get kids interested in learning about gravity as they head back to school? Science NetLinks has released its first app, Gravity Launch, to educate kids about the important role it plays, particularly in space travel.
Gravity Launch, which is available for both iPad and Android tablets, encourages the user to pilot a rocket into space and to dock with space stations while avoiding crashing into the moon and Earth. In order to complete a mission successfully, users must decide what amount of thrust and which launch point, when combined with gravity, will allow them to reach their destination. The app offers both single-player games and the opportunity to play against an opponent and is appropriate both for informal, at-home use and to supplement classroom learning. Science NetLinks has created a brief video, http://www.sciencenetlinks.com/videos/gravity-launch-app-promo/, to demonstrate the app.
Science NetLinks, which can be found at http://www.sciencenetlinks.com, is a K12 science education resource produced by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The site, which was named one of the 2013 Best Websites for Teaching & Learning by the American Association of School Librarians, offers free standards-aligned lessons, interactives, tools, podcasts, and hands-on activities for teachers, students, and families.
Science NetLinks has a long history of exploring and sharing complex science concepts through technology, said project director Suzanne Thurston. The Gravity Launch app builds on that by using devices kids are comfortable with to learn about a key scientific concept, in this case gravity, in a fun way.
The Gravity Launch app is free and is available from the iTunes store and Google Play.
Science NetLinks is part of Thinkfinity.org (http://www.thinkfinity.org), the Verizon Foundations award-winning educational website with tens of thousands of free, engaging materials for teachers and students. This comprehensive resource includes K-12 lesson plans, in-class activities, and videos, all searchable by grade level, keyword, or subject.
